Black Equity at Work Rubric

Our rubric is comprised of 5 pillars that align with both Internal and External markers of Black Equity:

  • Provides a clear standard for what “good “looks like in creating a racially equitable workplace
  • Supports companies in setting an ambitious target and creating a robust racial equity plan
  • Give executives confidence their organization can make measurable progress on the journey toward Black equity
  • Enables employers to receive recognition for committing to action, with accountability

We score on a 100-point basis, with a 60-point threshold for certification. Details of the score breakdown can be seen below:

Overall Customer Journey

Part I: Commitment & Plan Approval

  • After Executive Sponsor Commitment, we’ll hold a start work meeting for the Project Kickoff with your team to give an introduction to the process and expectations.
  • Next, we’ll let you align internally and give you the materials you’ll need to begin Baseline Data Collection.
  • Once you’ve collected the baseline data, we’ll be able to provide you with your score and benchmark report during the Baseline Review.
  • Following, you’ll take the output of the baseline to determine which areas you should focus in for your Plan Development, where you’ll be creating a plan to achieve certification within 3 years.
  • Once you’ve completed the plan, we’ll hold a Plan Review, before recognizing your Plan Approval.

Below, is an illustrative project timeline example.

Part II: Plan Approval & Certification

Plan Approved
Plan approved that sets a goal above the 60-point minimum threshold to reach certification in a 1-3 year timeframe. The soonest an employer can achieve Certification is one year after being Plan Approved.

Execute Plan
Employer works toward meeting the objectives and metrics set forth in plan. 1- 3 years to meet threshold number of points for certification

Performance and Plan Assessed
Must make proportional progress each year toward threshold. Toward the end of year one, employers’ progress across all Black Equity indicators is assessed and scored based on the rubric. Their resulting score determines whether they qualify for Certification and at which tier.

Certification
Based on meeting points threshold and submitting acceptable plan for subsequent year. Authorized to use MLT Black Equity at Work mark and recognized by Black Equity at Work Alliance. Employers with significant work environment challenges for Black employees that expect to earn Certification at the end of year one are advised to focus intensively on improving their work environment and also explaining the meaningful steps they are making to improve Black equity generally.

Part III: Re-Certification & Up-Tiering

Re-Certification
Annual re-Certification is required to maintain status and eligibility for high performance recognition

Tiering
We offer four Certification tiers. The tiers are:

  • Platinum (90 and above)
  • Gold (80-89)
  • Silver (70-79)
  • Bronze (60-69)

Re-Certification
The Certification mark employers are permitted to display during the year following Certification will include their tier (e.g. “MLT Black Equity at Work Certified – Bronze”).

Tiers offer employers that may be further along on the Black Equity journey additional opportunities for distinction based on progress. They are also valuable for employers with internal work environment challenges that achieve Certification, as they will reinforce the employer’s message that, while marked progress has been made, more work, still needs to be done.
